The Brown beetle fly represents the emerging grass grub. Tied with deer hair this beetle hatches out of the soil in paddocks during Nov/December in New Zealand and on evening can be in huge clouds.
These days farmers tend to manage grass grub extensively but the beetle still exists in good numbers. Some years are better than others as is for many insects.
